Starbucks whips up Harry Potter's Butterbeer

Muggles rejoice! We may yet be able to have a taste of the famous Butterbeer of Hogsmeade. This concoction comes as a frappuccino and not offically licenced to the Harry Potter franchise but I guess this will do until we are able to cross-over to the wizarding world.

While it isn't advertised nationally, it is said that Starbucks is allowing customers to order the famous Harry Potter Butterbeer — so long as you provide them this recipe.

  • A Creme Frappuccino base. Don’t skimp on the fat by asking for skim or 2% milk as whole milk is required for the right consistency.
  • Add 3 pumps of caramel syrup.
  • Add 3 pumps of toffee nut syrup.
  • Top with caramel drizzle, wave your wand 3x and say Bibbity Bobbity Boo! (Damnit, wrong book!)

Update: Ordered this from Starbucks Eastwood Mall on November 2, 2013 and it was pretty good. Baristas weren't exactly aware that this recipe even exists but they were happy to oblige. Recipe btw is for a Grande-sized drink which costs P170. So, go try it now! Locally, Starbucks will only be able to make Butterbeer so long as they are offering the Holiday drinks because one of the main ingredients, toffee nut syrup, is only available for during  the Christmas season (for stores in the US, Toffee Nut is available all year round). Don't forget to write down the secret recipe and give this to your friendly, neighborhood barista. Source 1 Source 2

Got a testimonial right here! So, go show Starbucks a recipe and don't forget to say Bibbity Bobbity Boo! *toink*

If you are not too keen on cold drinks, here is the Latte version of the recipe off http://starbuckssecretmenu.net.

  • Whole milk steamer
  • Add Caramel syrup (2 for tall, 3 for grande, 4 for venti)
  • Add Toffee nut syrup (2 for tall, 3 for grande, 4 for venti)
  • Add Cinnamon Dolce syrup (2 for tall, 3 for grande, 4 for venti)
  • Whipped cream and salted caramel bits on top
  • Optional if you prefer to add a coffee taste: Add a shot of espresso (2 for a grande or venti)

Butterbeer is getting so much buzz, it got featured in the Facebook page of our favorite food/resto search app - looloo! And they linked over to our post! Thanks loloo!

Oh and did I mention that we got a link back from several sites including Entertainment Weekly? Here's a screenshot! You may also read the article here.

    2. I got a creme-based Grande Caramel Frappe, then the toffee nut syrup, and it was good! :) Only for Php170

  3. Wow, that is great to hear. It was Startbucks in Emerald that said that they only have Toffee Nut during the Christmas season but if what you said is true, that's awesome.

    1. Toffee Nut syrup is only available during the Christmas and pre-Christmas season in the Philippines, and only lasts as long as there are supplies available. During the other periods of the year, we suggest a mix of Caramel and Hazelnut syrup that tastes a bit similar to Toffee Nut syrup. Replying as a barista here and I just made this drink for a customer earlier. :D

  5. I wonder what a passable hot version would be. If I was forced to guess I'd probably say steamed milk with the same syrups mentioned. Perhaps with white mocha for added creaminess...

  6. As a former barista, just FYI you can really order any combination of milk, syrups and coffee (or no coffee) that you want, you are not limited to the menu. It just has the combinations that seem to sell the best. But if you go to a Starbucks and ask for a "Butterbeer Frappuccino" or a "pancake latte" or one of the many other combos that people have given funny names in the last few years...don't be surprised or angry if they don't know what you're talking about! Just ask for it with the ingredients listed (year round!) and you shall receive :)

A friend of mine shared your post earlier and immediately tried it. She says its yummy! I am going to make sure to drop by a Starbucks later and order this one.

    1. I did! I very much enjoyed it! I have a regular branch I go to and they were very surprised when I ordered something different from my regular, not only was it creme-based, but it was caramel!

But they were more than happy to whip up my 'Butterbeer' and was glad that I enjoyed it! Thanks again!

  10. Was able to do this at the Starbucks Crossroads branch, but switched the caramel drizzle with mocha drizzle.

    Thanks! :)

  12. Is there an alternative to the cinnamon dolce syrup? My best friend just tried to order it and they said that none of the Starbucks branches in Metro Manila have that kind of syrup :\

  13. I think toffeenut is already available beyond the Christmas season, well at least for this year. My best friend who's a barista told me that one of their new pre-Christmas drinks, Salted Caramel Mocha, has toffeenut in it.

This would be exciting to try asap.

  18. Well, for your information, this drink comes from the "Starbucks' Secret Menu", a menu that is not displayed in their cafes and also, not all the baristas are familiar with the whole menu.

  24. I wanted to try this out... but the barista gave us a caution that this will be too sweet.. and they didn't have that Cinnamon Dolce syrup. Too bad.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yup, someone said in a previous comment that cinnamon dolce for the latte is not available here. Not sure if they have an alternative for that. But if you try the frappe recipe instead (the first recipe listed), they have all the ingredients and it isn't too sweet naman :)

  25. I think I finally found a reason to visit the nearest Starbucks this weekend. :D

  26. I ordered a tall one with less caramel syrup because a friend said it would be too sweet.

So for tall drink, the perfect recipe is:

    Base: creme frappuccino
    1 pump of caramel syrup
2 pumps of toffee nut syrup
    Top with caramel drizzle

    ReplyDelete
  27. actually they sell "butterbeer" in the harry potter exhibit in london. it's toffee flavored soda with the topping that tastes like rock salt and cheese froth from happy lemon. so it's really buttery tasting and with the fizz from the soda, it does feel a bit like you're drinking beer. it's yummy!! but maybe you'd have to go to various places to get it -- get italian soda from seattle's best, the syrup combination from starbucks, then get the cheese froth from happy lemon.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think my comment wasn't posted..

    I'll try again:

I ordered a tall one with this recipe

    Base: creme frappuccino
1 pump of caramel syrup (supposedly 2 but a friend working at Starbucks said that would make it too sweet)
2 pumps of toffee nut syrup
    Top with caramel drizzle

And yes, it came with a sticker for planner.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yay for the sticker confirmation. I got them too! So for those asking in earlier comments, you could probably ask if they don't readily give you stickers for your Butterbeer order.

  29. I had the real butterbeer at Universal Studios (Rowling herself went and tasted 50 different recipes before they got it to what she imagined it to taste like) and so i was very excited to try this. Sadly it doesn't taste right at all and the consistancy is all wrong! It's a carbonated syrup drink, not a slushy and it taste vanilla-y, not caramel. Sorry. get some vanilla cream soda and and some rich vanilla ice cream. Blend the ice cream with some heavy whipping cream and a little sugar and then pour the cream soda into it down the side so the cream floats. That's what i do when i want some butterbeer, it's much closer.

    1. Helpful comment is helpful! Thank you :) Your alternative does sound closer to the real butterbeer, and definitely cheaper. Plus, you can make it anytime on your own.

  34. Tried this in the Netherlands, it's SCRUMPTIOUS! (and I don't even like caramel *haha) - really you have to try this! Left the recipe at the store, the baristas were just as excited as we were! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I tried the frappe and it's pretty good! Thank you for sharing.

I also tried the latte though, and they don't seem to have the cinnamon dolce syrup available anymore. I don't know if adding cinnamon powder has the same effect but it worked out okay for me.

  36. tried this in General Santos.. They whipped it up and its gooooooooood. Thank you for posting this :)

  37. Is this available in all starbucks stores? Including in Singapore? Please tell me :(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. YES! This is available in all Starbucks around the globe. In the Philippines though, the toffee nut syrup ingredient is only available during the holiday season so you will have to ask if they still have it there. In the US, toffee nut syrup is available all year round.
